# Signs of Success: Maximizing Profit with Wide Format Displays

Wide format printing is about much more than producing bigger graphics. For print providers, it can open the door to new applications, stronger customer relationships and additional revenue opportunities.

A customer who walks through the door looking for a banner may actually need much more. Maybe they're preparing for a grand opening and also need window graphics, directional signage, floor graphics and promotional displays. Perhaps they're exhibiting at a trade show and need a backdrop, retractable displays, branded graphics and signage throughout their booth.

The opportunity isn't simply to print what the customer asks for. It's to understand what they're trying to accomplish and identify additional ways wide format can help them get there.

## Look Beyond the Initial Request

One of the simplest ways to get more value from wide format is to look beyond the individual product being ordered.

Consider a retail customer requesting a window graphic for an upcoming promotion. That request can start a larger conversation. Are there opportunities for point-of-purchase displays inside the store? Could wall or floor graphics reinforce the campaign? Do they need directional signage or additional graphics at other locations?

The goal isn't to sell customers products they don't need. It's to uncover needs they may not have considered—and provide a more complete solution.

This approach can also help print providers strengthen customer relationships. When customers know they can rely on one partner for multiple applications, there is less need to source different components of a project from several vendors.

## Explore Higher-Value Applications

Banners and traditional signage remain important parts of wide format printing, but today's equipment, media and finishing technologies make it possible to produce an incredibly diverse range of applications.

Window and wall graphics can transform ordinary spaces into branded environments. Floor graphics can add promotional or directional messaging in places traditional signage can't reach. Retail and point-of-purchase displays can help brands connect with customers at the moment of purchase.

Wide format can also extend into trade show and event graphics, rigid signage, vehicle and fleet graphics, décor, environmental graphics and more.

For print providers, expanding into additional applications creates more opportunities to serve existing customers while also reaching new markets.

The key is determining which applications make sense for your equipment, capabilities and customer base. Adding every possible product isn't necessarily the goal. Developing the right mix of profitable applications is.

## Make Production Efficiency Part of the Profit Equation

Generating more revenue is only one side of profitability. What happens during production matters just as much.

Material waste, reprints, excessive setup time and inefficient workflows can quickly eat into the value of a job. A project that looks profitable on paper may tell a different story once wasted media, labor and production time are considered.

That's why maximizing wide format profitability also means looking closely at the workflow behind the finished product.

Could better color management reduce reprints? Could workflow automation eliminate repetitive production steps? Would choosing a media better suited for the application make installation easier? Could different equipment improve throughput or reduce manual labor?

Even relatively small improvements can add up when they're repeated across hundreds of jobs.

Understanding how equipment, ink, media and workflow work together can help print providers make smarter production decisions and get more from the capabilities they already have.

## Don't Overlook Finishing

Printing may create the graphic, but finishing often turns it into the product the customer actually needs.

Cutting, laminating, mounting and other finishing processes can significantly affect the final appearance, durability and usability of a wide format application. Bringing more of those capabilities into the production process can also allow a print provider to deliver a more complete finished product.

That convenience has value.

A customer preparing for an event, opening a new location or launching a promotion may not want to coordinate printing with one vendor, finishing with another and installation with someone else. The more of the project a print provider can effectively manage, the easier the process becomes for the customer.

It also creates another opportunity to differentiate beyond price alone.

## Sell Solutions, Not Square Feet

Wide format can become highly competitive when every conversation comes down to price per square foot.

But customers aren't really buying square feet of printed material. They're trying to solve a problem.

They may want to attract attention to a storefront, guide visitors through a facility, create an engaging trade show booth, promote a new product or transform an interior space.

Understanding that goal changes the conversation.

Instead of simply asking about dimensions, quantity and material, ask what the customer is trying to accomplish. Where will the graphic be used? How long does it need to last? What surface will it be applied to? Will it be installed indoors or outdoors? Are there other areas where consistent messaging would be useful?

Those questions can reveal opportunities that aren't apparent from the original print request.

They also allow the print provider to bring expertise into the conversation. Choosing the appropriate equipment, ink, substrate and finishing process becomes part of solving the customer's problem—not simply producing their file.

## Get More From the Capabilities You Already Have

Growing a wide format business doesn't always mean purchasing another printer.

Sometimes the biggest opportunities come from taking a fresh look at existing capabilities.

Are there applications your current equipment can produce that you aren't actively selling? Are there specialty media you haven't explored? Could adding or improving finishing capabilities open new opportunities? Are sales teams familiar enough with wide format applications to recognize potential projects when speaking with customers?

Understanding what your current technology can do—and matching those capabilities to customer needs—can uncover opportunities that may already be sitting within your business.

When additional equipment does make sense, the same approach applies. Start with the application and business opportunity, then determine which technology best supports it.

## Think Bigger About Wide Format

Maximizing profit with wide format isn't simply about producing more output. It's about creating more value from every opportunity.

That can mean expanding a single request into a complete project, introducing customers to applications they haven't considered, improving production efficiency or finding new ways to use equipment already on the floor.

Most importantly, it means shifting the conversation from **“What can we print?”** to **“What are you trying to accomplish?”**

Because when print providers understand the customer's bigger picture, wide format becomes more than a production capability. It becomes a way to solve problems, strengthen relationships and create new opportunities for growth.

At Millcraft, we work with print providers to find the right combination of equipment, media, ink and workflow solutions for their wide format goals. Whether you're looking to expand into new applications or get more from your existing capabilities, we're here to help you find the opportunities that make sense for your business.
