Delivering More Than Magazines: Helping Build a More Literate Future

At Millcraft, we believe the strongest communities are built through opportunity, education, and meaningful partnerships. That's why we are incredibly proud to support MagLiteracy, a one-of-a-kind nonprofit organization dedicated to putting engaging reading materials into the hands of people who need them most.

This summer, MagLiteracy launched an ambitious initiative to distribute more than 250,000 educational and enrichment magazines across communities throughout Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia. As schools close for the summer and access to classroom libraries becomes more limited, this effort helps ensure children, families, and lifelong learners continue to have access to high-quality reading materials.

As the nation's only magazine-focused literacy logistics organization, MagLiteracy rescues donated magazines from publishers and consumers, then redistributes them at no cost through schools, libraries, food banks, youth organizations, literacy programs, job training centers, shelters, and other community partners. Their innovative approach helps transform magazines into valuable educational resources while reducing waste and expanding access to literacy.

The publications span a wide range of subjects including science, history, geography, technology, creativity, design, current events, and personal storytelling. With highly visual layouts and approachable reading lengths, magazines can be especially effective at engaging reluctant readers and encouraging curiosity.

"Generous logistics support from Millcraft is helping connect large quantities of donated educational magazines with the literacy programs best positioned to place them directly into the hands of children, families and readers who need them most," said John Mennell, founder of MagLiteracy. "This support is a gamechanger for our ability to reach the highest need regions from a company known for giving back to the communities it serves."

Supporting organizations like MagLiteracy is a natural extension of Millcraft's longstanding commitment to education, literacy, and the communities we serve. While MagLiteracy focuses on connecting readers with inspiring content, Millcraft is honored to provide the transportation and logistics expertise that helps those materials reach schools, libraries, food banks, and community organizations throughout the Midwest and Appalachia.

For Millcraft President Greg Lovensheimer, the partnership reflects a shared belief in the transformative power of literacy.

"Millcraft has been proud to support MagLiteracy from the outset! Literacy is not just a skillset but is an absolutely fundamental societal building block. It builds strong, sustainable communities of critical thinkers that are equipped to deal with tomorrow's problems. As individuals elevate their reading and understanding, they can apply their learnings from the past and leverage that learning for growth and future success. Studies show that higher literacy rates equate to faster economic growth, improved health outcomes, and reduced inequality. Basic literacy must be a given in the U.S. in the 21st century as it creates an opportunity for lifelong learning that improves the lives of everyone, not just the at-risk population."

The success of this initiative is also made possible through the generosity of publishers including Highlights for Children, National Geographic, Communication Arts, Make:, and The Sun, along with the dedication of MagLiteracy volunteers and Denison University interns who are helping identify organizations that can distribute these valuable resources throughout their communities.

Together, these partnerships demonstrate what can happen when organizations unite around a common purpose. Every pallet delivered represents more than magazines. It represents curiosity sparked, reading habits strengthened, and new opportunities created for children and adults alike.

Millcraft is honored to play a role in helping MagLiteracy expand its reach and bring educational resources to communities across the region. We look forward to continuing our support of an organization that is making a lasting difference, one magazine at a time.
